How to pronounce those atas words

 

As part of my marketing lectures, I sometimes have to quote examples of how companies target different market segments.  So when it comes to the luxury market segment, I often scratch my head on how I should properly pronounce those French and Italian brand names which are so ubiquitous in the luxury scene.

Most of the time, I usually just pronounce them as I think they should be pronounced.  Well, finally for some reason I decided to check out how they should rightly be pronounced.  If this website is reliable that is.

Lamborghini : Lam-bo Ghee-nee

What a happy day for me.

After my lesson today, one of the girls in my class told me “You really make the lesson so interesting”.

I am humbled by her feedback.   The power of students to make the teacher feel inspired can sometimes be more than what a teacher can do to empower her students.

I feel thankful to this student. I also want to thank the rest of her classmates who were really attentive and courteous to me throughout the three weeks of lessons I had with them.   Many of them came up to say ‘Thank you teacher” after each lesson, something I never experienced in my 14 years of teaching so far!

Indeed, I feel inspired by this ‘Z-generation’ of youths.

Macaron vs Marcaroon

Inspired by the recent news of the long queues at the recently opened Laduree Boutique in Takashimaya, I started a conversation between me and my colleague on how people are so willing to pay as much as $5 - $8 for a small macaron.

This led to an innoncent question by my colleague, "Isn't macaroon supposed to be pronounced "mare-kuh-roon"?  To her, macaron and macaroon refer to the same confectionery.

Well, before today, I had no idea if they are the same thing.

But my curiosity to know what was the correct way to pronounce the word led me to do a Google search to find out the answer.

And I found that Macaron and Macaroon are actually two very different confectioneries!

To give a quick explaination of the difference, the two pictures will do the job.

The first pic depicts a Macaron while the second is a Macaroon.

The website here has a good detailed writeup of the difference between the two, but here's my own quick version:

Macaron -  A brightly colored cookie that usually contains a filling that is sandwiched between a top and bottom base made of eggs, icing sugar, granulated sugar and almond powder.

Macaroon - A more chewy type of cookie made with egg-white, sugar, and coconut, often topped with a cherry.

And of course, the way they are pronounced are definitely very different.  You can hear an audio version of macaron here and that of macaroon here.

Annoying - Can't sleep!

Maybe it's because of that Starbucks Green Tea Latte I had this afternoon at Paragon?

It's going to be a very stressful week. I have so many tasks to complete.

But the world is full of beautiful things, like this gorgeous full moon I saw when we were on the way to Edison's school. How can I not spare a moment to capture the wondrous scene.
